Australian Lolitas Classic Paintings shoot

1238010_10151642445521560_10650891_nThe next Australian event after the International Lolitas themed shoot!

What is the theme? Pick a classic painting or sculpture and reproduce it in lolita. Once the picture has been posted, the rest of the participating lolitas need to guess the original painting (so make sure to keep that a secret!)

Please check out the main event photo for inspiration. Thank you to Selina and the Melbourne community for allowing me to use this as an example for the event.  The wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie situated in Milan of Italy is covered with a fresco styled painting called The Last Supper’ by Leonardo da Vinci.

And these are the results ♥

‘Sistine Madonna’, also called’La Madonna di San Sisto’, is an oil painting by the Italian artist Raphael

In the painting, the Madonna, holding the Christ Child and flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara, stands on clouds before dozens of obscured cherubs, while two distinctive winged cherubs rest on their elbows beneath her.

Cming does her on take on the two winged cherubs wearing a white OP. She certainly does look Angelic.

Lindzi

Most people would know this painting as a portrait of ‘Marie Antoinette’, Martin Van Meytens, 1767. She was the daughter of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, and the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. Here she is depicted at twelve years old. Recently the person in the portrait was re-identified as Maria-Josepha (Marie-Josephe in French), though it hasn’t been widely publicised. Apparently the plaque in the Austrian palace was simply recently swapped to reflect the change.

Lindzi wears Angelic Pretty’s Cats Teaparty and pulls off a lovely pose replicating the original.

Jayne

Sidney Nolan’s 1946-47 paintings on the theme of the 19th-century bushranger ‘Ned Kelly’ is one of the greatest series of Australian painting of the 20th century and the National Gallery of Australia holds all but one.  Nolan’s starkly simplified depiction of Kelly in his homemade armour has become an iconic Australian image.

Jayne uses a similar backdrop and block colours to reproduce the painting. I particularly like the use of her parasol.

Mona lolita

The ‘Mona Lisa’  is a half-length portrait of a woman by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci, which has been acclaimed as “the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world.

The painting, thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, is in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel, and is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506, although Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517.

I like to call this the Mona Lolita (gothic) While I dont quite have the models nose, I think it is a pretty reasonable representation of the original. I am wearing Moi meme Moitie’s Sleeping Garden OP in purple.

Alycia“Essai de figure en plein air (vers la gauche)” and “Essai de figure en plein air (vers la droite)”, ‘Woman with a Parasol’, Claude Monet. The pictured woman is Hoschédé Suzanne, daughter of Alice Hoschédé, second wife of Claude Monet (1868-1899)

A very good pick by Alycia, the subject of parasols fits in perfectly with Lolita. Alycia is wearing an Angelic Pretty Lacy lady OP.

Elliot‘Saturn Devouring His Son’, a somewhat disturbing portrait of the titan Saturn consuming one of his children, was one of six works with which Francisco Goya decorated the dining room. According to Roman myth (inspired by the original Greek myth), it had been foretold that one of the sons of Saturn would overthrow him, just as he had overthrown his father, Caelus. To prevent this, Saturn ate his children moments after each was born. His wife Ops eventually hid his sixth son, Jupiter, on the island of Crete, deceiving Saturn by offering a stone wrapped in swaddling in his place. Jupiter eventually supplanted his father just as the prophecy had predicted.

Also titled “Aristocrat Devouring His Ouji” by Elliot. I prefer this version much more!

‘Pandora’, John Wiliam Waterhouse. In classical Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on Earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her, so he did—using water and earth and the gods endowed her with many gifts.

When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus’ brother. With her, Pandora was given a beautiful jar – with instructions not to open it under any circumstance. Impelled by her curiosity, Pandora opened it, and all evil contained therein escaped and spread over the earth.

Pepper opened the box, would you have done the same?

Tamara2Unknown painting. Tamara is wearing Angelic Pretty Aqua Princess.

Geogina‘The Milkmaid’sometimes called The Kitchen Maid, is an oil-on-canvas painting of a “milkmaid”, in fact a domestic kitchen maid, by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. It is now in the Rijksmuseumin Amsterdam, Netherlands, the exact year of the painting’s completion is unknown, however estimation is around 1658–1661.

Georgina reproduces this painting in a great amount of detail. She has included the milk, table, window as well as items hung on the wall on the right and a reference to the shoe warmer on the bottom left with a box of lolita shoes.

NicoleNicole3Three classical paintings ‘Windflowers’, (1903) ‘The Magic Circle‘, (1886) and Boreas (1903) painted by John William Waterhouse (born between January and April 1849; died 10 February 1917) was an English painter known for working in the Pre-Raphaelite style.  Borrowing stylistic influences not only from the earlier Pre-Raphaelites but also from his contemporaries, theImpressionists, his artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend.

Nicole, Cheryl and Heliok teamed up together to produce three lovely paintings by Waterhouse. The attention to details, colours, backdrops and poses are all extremely well done!

AMy‘The Morning Walk‘ by Thomas Gainsborough shows an elegant young couple strolling through a woodland landscape, an attentive dog at the lady’s heel. William Hallett and Elizabeth Stephen were both aged 21 and due to be married in the summer of 1785, shortly after the painting was completed.

Amy and Adam did an amazing job reproducing the classical painting by Gainsborough. Its not hard to imagine either of them in the original setting of when this painting was created.

Marzy‘Ajax and Cassandra’, by Solomon J Soloman. With Cassandra clinging to the plinth of Athena’s statue while Ajax attempts to abduct her is based on the story of the Rape of Cassandra told in Book II of Virgil’s Aeneid.  Cassandra, a daughter of the Trojan king had spurned the advances of Apollo, who punished her by ordaining that although she should always make true prophecies they would not be believed. The Trojans rejected her warnings that Troy was in imminent danger and when the Greeks sacked the city Cassandra fled to the Temple of Athena. It was from here that Cassandra was dragged by Ajax, and it was for this crime that he was later  killed by Athena and the sea god Poseidon.

Marzy and Catherine pull off a difficult pose to reproduce Ajax and Cassandra. Marzy, looking very much like a Greek God is wearing Angelic pretty Wonder Party mini sleeve JSK.

GoldieThe painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’  is one of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s masterworks and, as the name implies, uses a pearl earring for a focal point. It is now in the the Mauritshuis gallery in The Hague collection.

Goldie is picture perfect nailing the exact same gaze as the original painting. Her use of flowers for lolita to replace the head scarf was very well planned.

Sally‘Lady with an Ermine‘, this painting is one of only four portraits of women painted by Leonardo da Vinci. The subject of the portrait is identified as Cecilia Gallerani, and probably was painted at a time when she was the mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke ofMilan, and Leonardo was in the service of the Duke 1489–1490. At the time her portrait was painted, Cecilia was about sixteen years old and member of a large family that was neither wealthy nor noble. Her father served for a time at the Duke’s court. Cecilia was renowned for her beauty, her scholarship, and her poetry.

Sally looks lovely posing as Cecilia and holding Kyubey as her replacement for the ermine.

KateThe Three Graces is a Neoclassical sculpture, in marble by Antonio Canova. It represents the mythological three charites, daughters of Zeus – identified on some engravings of the statue as, from left to right, Euphrosyne, Aglaea and Thalia – who were said to represent beauty, charm and joy. The Graces presided over banquets and gatherings primarily to entertain and delight the guests of the Gods. As such they have always proved to be attractive figures for historical artists.

Kate produced all three graces with only herself as the model and has blended the pictures together perfectly! Her poses are spot on and I really like how she did this using three different lolita coordinates.

Jess‘The Scream’  is the popular name given to each of four versions of a composition, created as both paintings and pastels, by the Expressionist artist Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910. Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream of Nature) is the title Munch gave to these works, all of which show a figure with an agonized expression against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky.

In his diary in an entry headed, Nice 22 January 1892, Munch described his inspiration for the image:

One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjord—the sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The color shrieked. This became The Scream.

Jess is wearing a Baby the Stars Shine Bright Early Summer Chocolate Strawberry Parfait Skirt for the photo. I really like how she positioned the photo on a bridge, as it has in the original painting.

Erin

‘The Death of Marat’  is a painting by Jacques-Louis David of the murdered French revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat. It is one of the most famous images of the Revolution. David was the leading French painter, as well as a Montagnard and a member of the revolutionary Committee of General Security. The painting shows the radical journalist lying dead in his bath on 13 July 1793 after his murder by Charlotte Corday. Painted in the months after Marat’s murder.

A collaboration between Erin and Vasiliki to reproduce this classic painting. It’s very appropriate the at model is holding a Gothic Lolita Bible in her hand!

Candice

The painting by John Everett Millais, depicts ‘Ophelia’, a character from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, singing while floating in a river just before she drowns. The scene is described in Act IV, Scene VII of the play in a speech by Queen Gertrude.. Ophelia has fallen into the river from a tree overhanging it, while gathering flowers. She lies in the water singing songs, as if unaware of her danger (“incapable of her own distress”). Her clothes, trapping air, have allowed her to temporarily stay afloat (“Her clothes spread wide, / And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up.”). But eventually, “her garments, heavy with their drink, / Pull’d the poor wretch from her melodious lay” down “to muddy death.”

This reproduction certainly took dedication! Candice braved the cold to produce this lovely picture.

I hope you enjoyed looking through these pictures and learning a little bit about classical paintings in the process. Everyone did an amazing job!
